History of GNN

Thirty Years of Welcome

The year was 1978. Sony introduced the Walkman, “Stayin’ Alive” was at the top of the charts, and “Annie Hall” took Best Picture at the Oscars.  Back then, a dedicated group of friendly Glencoe residents decided to take on the job of welcoming newcomers to town under the auspices of The Glencoe Human Relations Committee, and the seeds of the current Glencoe Newcomers and Neighbors Club were planted.

Thirty years later, our organization is going strong. Last year, in recognition of the fact that our membership base spans both those new to town and longer-term members, we changed our name from the Glencoe Newcomers Club to Glencoe Newcomers and Neighbors. This September, at our 15th annual Beach Party bash, we will celebrate the thirtieth year that our group has been welcoming new residents, hosting fun events for members and their families, building community, and fostering lasting friendships.
